Dark Matter 2018-03-04

Dark matter research is one of the most important areas of activity in physics today. In China, Tsinghua University has taken the lead in directly detecting dark matter particles and has established a group involving Sichuan University, Nankai University, China Institute of Atomic Energy, Yalong River Hydropower Development Company in China, and others. Tsinghua University, together with Yalong River Hydropower Development Company, has constructed China JinPing Underground Laboratory (CJPL), which has the deepest rock overburden in the world and lowest muon flux inside. The dark matter group plan to set up a tonne-scale high-purity germanium(HPGe) array detector to search for the low mass dark matter particle with mass less than 10GeV and the sensitivity down to 10-46cm-2.

The group is establishing a 10kg mass-scale HPGe prototype detector now and has achieved the first physical results, which have been one of the best exclusive curves for light dark matter in 2013 and published in Physical Review D. This is the first physical result for dark matter published by a Chinese group. The physical result published in 2014 was the best sensitivity provided by a point-contact germanium detector in the world and this result excluded definitely the favored region by CoGeNT result. The serial physical results published led the dark matter direct search in China to be the world level.

At the same time, the construction of the China Jinping underground Laboratory Phase-II (CJPL-II) started in 2014 by Tsinghua University and Yalong River Hydropower Development Company. CJPL-II will be the deepest and largest underground laboratory in the world when it is setup by the end of 2016. CJPL will provide an excellent underground laboratory for scientists in China and abroad.
