As part of their professional internship program, on September 24, 2020, TUNEM 2019 students visited the State Nuclear Security Technology Center (SNSTC) located in the Fangshan District in Beijing. This is the fifth activity of the professional internship program. Associate Professor Yu Jiyang and TUNEM management staff from the department led the 7 students to visit on site while 19 students attended online. Ms. Lu Hong, director of the Training Division of SNSTC welcomed the visitors and gave a brief introduction of SNSTC. She explained the purpose of establishment of the center, its official functions, training facilities available at center, and how it is helping to make nuclear security better worldwide.
This activity was conducted through the combination of both teaching and online live streaming sharing. The basic terms of nuclear security, good practice, and experience of China's nuclear security were explained in detail through lectures, topic presentation, and facility tour. In addition, the activity was shared in real time with live streaming.
After the lecture, students visited different laboratories and training facilities at SNSTC, including exhibition training building, analytical laboratory building, environmental laboratory building, nuclear material accounting and control facility, response force training and exercise facilities, and access control facility. Some of the equipment and work being carried out in the analytical lab include: spectrometer to check the ratio of Plutonium and Uranium, calorimeter to measure the content of Plutonium in a material, worker radiation detector with dosimeter, Germanium detector to detect nuclear material etc. In the environmental lab, performance testing of nuclear security equipment in real environment can be performed which include vibration environment, humidity environment, temperature chamber, humidity and salting chamber, Xenon aging test machine, dust lab & water testing lab, electromagnetic compatibility room to test electromagnetic interference and working temperature room etc. Students also visited non-live fire training facility that is used to train security personnel to combat in different situations.
It was for the first time that students visited such a comprehensive and integrated training center related to nuclear security. All the students gained knowledge about nuclear security, how to ensure the security and latest techniques in practice to make the security better and reliable. Visiting SNSTC was a great experience for students to get better understanding about the nuclear security and its different aspects.
