Tsinghua University holds opening ceremony of International Master’s Program in Nuclear Engineering and Management, Class of 2017

On September 15, 2017, Tsinghua University, along with three major nuclear power groups in China, held an opening ceremony for the class of 2017, Tsinghua University International Master’s Program in Nuclear Engineering and Management (TUNEM) at Main Building, Tsinghua University. Qin Zhijun, deputy director general of power industry department from National Energy Administration, Wang Shenggang, deputy secretary-general of China Scholarship Council (CSC), Cao Shudong, vice president of the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), Wei Suo, vice president of State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC), Shu Guogang, vice president of China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN), as well as Yuan Si, vice chairperson of Tsinghua University Council presented and delivered opening remarks. Six embassy representatives from the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, the Republic of Sudan, the Republic of Uganda, Ukraine, Islamic Republic of Iran took part. About 50 delegates from the Ministry of Education, National Energy Administration, National Nuclear Safety Administration, CNNC, SPIC, SGN, China Nuclear Energy International Development Alliance, Tsinghua University and all 24 freshmen of the program from 8 countries were present.

 

Qin Zhijun noted that with the increasing focus on climate change and environmental pollution all over the world, nuclear energy as a kind of clean energy has received extensive attention. Currently, the global nuclear power industry is experiencing a full recovery. Moreover, the expansion pf nuclear power program in China seems to have caught great attention in the world. In the meantime, Chinese leaders take the bilateral cooperation in energy sector as an important issue for discussion during official visits to foreign countries. To develop nuclear power and to share its relevant technology with other countries on a global scale have become a national strategy for China.

Wang Shenggang emphasized in his speech that Chinese government has been attaching great importance to the cooperation and exchanges in education and culture, especially in student exchanges. CSC encouraged the scholarship holders to work hard and would offer even better service to the CSC scholarship students.

Vice presidents of three major nuclear power groups in China expressed their expectations. Qualified individuals who can be very active in the international community of nuclear power industry are in high demand. They also extend best wishes to Tsinghua to build a leading brand for international talent development in nuclear engineering.

Yuan Si expressed a warm welcome to the freshmen of the program. He said, “Tsinghua University is the top university in China and the most reputable Chinese university in the world, which tops MIT as the world’s best university in the field of engineering in U.S. news ranking 2017.” In addition, he pointed out that there are three treasures in Tsinghua University, namely, the motto, the campus and the alumni. “Self-Discipline and Social Commitment” is the motto of Tsinghua. For a century, it nourished the spirit of Tsinghua and with changes throughout the years; it added new meaning to Tsinghua. Yet, the core values from this motto “devotion, patriotism, self-refinement” remains unchanged. Tsinghua's campus was named one of the most beautiful college campuses in the world by a panel of architects and campus designers in Forbes in 2010; it was the only university in Asia on the list. Students are fundamental to Tsinghua’s mission, and it has produced many notable graduates, especially in the political sphere, academic field and industry. These include former President Hu Jintao, and the current President Xi Jinping.

 “I have been here for just over 3 weeks and have already met friends almost from all corners of the earth and I can only imagine the valuable connections I will make during my time here. I highly anticipate making connections with industry professionals during my time here such as the meeting I had with Wang Kai (CGN) yesterday where we talked about the future of nuclear energy in Britain. I look forward to using what I learn here at Tsinghua to create a better future for china and my homeland and the connections between them in future energy related endeavors.” Nils Francis Sundstrom said.

Yu Jiyang extended congratulations to the freshmen and welcomed them to the Tsinghua family as the class advisor. He looks forward to the unique and extraordinary they will make to the intellectual and extracurricular life of the campus. Meanwhile, appointed as corporate advisor, KE Guotu from China Institute of Atomic Energy expressed that three nuclear groups would try their best to provide attractive internship for students and improve their practical skills in the field of nuclear energy and nuclear engineering.

 

TUNEM is an international professional master degree program for training high-level engineering and management talents in the field of nuclear power. Pursuing for excellent applicants with well-behaved personality, outstanding academics, and global vision, who are willing to continue their graduate studies in China and to contribute to the cooperation between china and their motherland after graduation.
